Residential TEFL Courses

For most students, there is no questioning the fact that the traditional classroom environment is the best way for them to acquire their TEFL certification. Although it requires time, commitment and a multitude of course-related expenses, nothing beats the feeling of knowing that you are learning your subjects within the walls of a brick-and-mortar classroom as opposed to taking online classes - and you can gain that advantage of being in an environment that is conducive to learning.

To give you an idea about how we conduct our residential TEFL courses, here is a rundown of each individual aspect:

Course Assessment & Features

Just as it is when taking any academic course, there are course assessment sessions held to determine how a student is doing. We consider factors such as teaching practice, language journal, material compilation, lesson observation, grammar and phonology tests as a way to gauge the performance of each individual student. We make it our main priority to pay attention to each individual student, so that their progress can be monitored.

In terms of course features, here are some of the aspects of the TEFL study which are included:

  • TEFL course completion
  • Examinations
  • Extensive teaching practice
  • Computer/Internet access
  • Accommodations

Course Materials

We have a teaching manual for its TEFL students which include the following fields of study: language awareness and grammar; teaching skills; classroom management and phonetics.  Lesson plans, journals, reading lists and teaching methodologies are all provided for our students to ensure that they are getting only the highest quality of TEFL education possible.

Trainee Teachers

Think of this part of the program as an On-the-Job-Training. We welcome trainee teachers to help them become familiar with how an actual TEFL classroom environment is conducted.

TEFL Trainer

Lastly, our team of trainers have all obtained TEFL certification, along with the other major degrees that they have earned. They are well-equipped with the teaching skills, experience and materials needed to ensure that only high-quality TEFL graduates are produced by us.

Our 6 Main Areas of Study

Now that you already have an idea about our residential course content, here are the six main areas of study that we have sub-divided our TEFL courses into:

1. Foreign Language Experience

No matter what your native language is, remember that as a TEFL teacher, you will be dealing with students and trainers who speak different dialects which originated from all parts of the world. The foreign language experience part of the TEFL courses that we offer aims to bridge that gap.

Basically, trainees will receive instructions in an unknown foreign language. This will help expose them to the distinct experience of how it is to be taught in the instructor's native tongue, how to be a learner, as well as pick up some points which can be used to direct their own teachings strategies.

2. Language Awareness

This part of the course focuses on grammar, word classes, simple and complex sentence elements, clauses, verbs, phrases, voice - and all the other intricate aspects of the English language. Phonology and phonemics are also covered.

3. Materials Project

When taking our TEFL certification course, students are required to develop their own materials which focus on vocabulary and grammar. The teaching materials can range from the traditional class handouts to the more high-tech computer presentations.

4. Student Profile

This is yet another fun part of the TEFL courses that we offer, where students are encouraged to build rapport by working with each other in sessions mediated by the trainer.

5. Teaching Practice

This is one of the most crucial parts of the course, where students are required to demonstrate in front of a real class the TEFL teaching principles that they have learned.

6. Teaching Techniques

There are many aspects of teaching techniques that need to be covered in a 4-week TEFL training course, ranging from lesson planning to classroom management; establishing rapport to observing classroom discipline; as well as the more technical teaching skills for reading, listening, speaking and writing. Teaching techniques also cover:

  • Creating materials
  • Correction techniques
  • Evaluation and testing
  • Games and songs in the classroom
  • Managing equipment and teaching aids
  • Teaching vocabulary and grammar
  • Teaching individual students, business English and young learners
